Trekking on Tavolara Island

Tavolara Island is a fascinating limestone formation located in front of the Gulf of Olbia. With its highest peak, Punta Cannone (565 meters), the island offers a unique view that ranges from Montalbo to Monte Limbara to the Strait of Bonifacio, including iconic points such as Capo Coda Cavallo, Capo Figari and the La Maddalena Archipelago. On particularly clear days it is possible to see Corsica to the North and Capo Comino to the South.

Excursion program

The day begins with a transfer by dinghy from Porto San Paolo to the Spalmatore di Terra beach, on the western coast of Tavolara. From here, a panoramic path winds along the coast of the island, crossing an area characterized by old lime kilns, until reaching Punta La Mandria to the south. near the lime kilns, continue towards the interior of the island, entering the Mediterranean scrub, until you come across a hidden passage in the cliff that can be overcome thanks to natural steps and a wooden ladder made from a single juniper trunk.

After about 90 minutes of climbing, you arrive at the “Bocca del Cannone”, a small grassy valley where you stop for a short break. Here you can take photos before tackling the most challenging part of the route: an equipped section that allows you to safely overcome some exposed points. This section is not recommended for those who suffer from vertigo.

The last section leads to the top of the island, Punta Cannone. From here the view repays the effort: you can admire Molara, Capo Coda Cavallo and San Teodoro to the south, the Gulf of Olbia and Monte Limbara to the west, up to Caprera and Corsica to the north.

On the summit is the Madonnina di Tavolara and a wooden cross, at the foot of the cross a small box contains the summit book, a notebook on which visitors can leave a thought or a trace of their passage.

Return and conclusion

After a stop at the top to rest and take photos, accompanied by a small Sardinian aperitif with carasau bread, sausage and pecorino cheese, the descent begins. Back at the Spalmatore beach, there is time for a refreshing swim in the clear waters before returning to the dinghy.
